tips for buying inline skates (rollerblades)?

I have a sudden urge to go rollerblading! Is this something people still do for fitness? I remember having so much fun doing this as a kid in the 90’s.

I know some skate basics… like big wheels are faster, but small wheels are more maneuverable, and softer wheels are better for shock absorption (street skating). But if if I wanted to work on cardio and leg strength, would I want smaller or larger wheels?

Most of the women’s skates look like ridiculous, cheap plastic things. I might have to shop in the boys section for some roller hockey skates or something.

Skating is not as popular as it was in it’s fad stage in the 90’s but it is still popular as exercise.

Generally, your old information is still correct but you will be very pleasantly surprised by how much skates have improved.

Don’t consider hockey skates, unless you are going to play hockey. Their design is very specific to the needs of the sport instead of general skating. Same with aggressive, speed, figure, or freestyle skates.

Yes, many women’s skates are decorated to look "feminine" which is bad if you don’t like that look. However, they also have a boot shaped to fit more woman’s feet better and to have notch in the back of the legs to give room for the muscle that is lower on women than men.
Consider looking at models that have both women’s and men’s sizes, they tend to look the same with small differences in color.

Larger wheels work your legs harder when you are accellerating or going up hills. They are also much nicer as you get to higher speeds that work you out more.
Back when you were skating before, 80mm wheels were the top size and racers used 5 of them. In the early 00’s wheels went through a size explosion where 80mm became the minimum for good skates and racers are on 100mm and larger wheels (only 4 of them).
]Since you have skated before, 84mm wheels should be a piece of cake and I would recommend 90mm for anyone getting serious for fitness. (I am about to change my skates from 5×84mm to 4×90mm) 100mm wheels are too large for some people but 90’s seem to be faster for any competent skater than the smaller wheels.

Another advantage of the skates with 90mm and larger wheels is that they will generally have fitness boots which are designed to fit snugger on the feet and have cuffs that are 1 to 2 inches shorter, which makes them more comfortable when skating farther or faster but not as demanding as the really short unpadded boots on racing skates. At that level, the women’s skates are less frilly looking.

How do I deal with this?

My wife and I have been together for a few years and she has gained about 25 lbs since we got together, and it is causing a lot of tension between us. Despite her claims that she will deal with it and I have to trust her, the weight never goes down. I have tried talking to her on many occasions about it and always end up with a teary or angry wife. It is not that I have not tried to support her or encourage her, I have bought fitness machines, a dog to walk, a gym membership, healthy cooking recipe books, given knowledge of good and bad food habits and exercise tips, and generally exhausted all avenues of aid. unfortunately she comfort eats whenever I am at work and is now suffering from depression as well as being newly pregnant with our first child. I know this may sound harsh, but I do not desire her in the way I used to and that lack of desire leads to a lack of intimacy which leads to a lack of empathy for her when she is making more excuses for not losing any weight. She doesn’t have a job, and her depression stops her doing anything much at all. It is a vicious cycle which I am seeing no way out of.

I am not the sort of person to be false and so I find it hard to show her love and support when all I feel is that she doesn’t want to make the effort to be healthy, and I feel let down by a woman who just wants everything easy and given to her instead of working to get it.

Any ideas would be welcome.
ok, just to be clear, I do walk with my wife every day. we have done a lot of miles on foot seeing some extremely beautiful places in our travels around Europe. It is not a case of constantly rubbing her face in it, it is conversations that we have from time to time. She will start complaining about clothes not fitting, and it starts up again. This is not something that just came up because she is pregnant, but a long term… aka 3 yr old problem, the pregnancy is a new twist on things. the weight is not the issue that affects how I feel, but the fact that she does nothing effective about it. It is exacerbated by the fact that we are best friends and laugh more than most when she is fit and happy but when she is down and depressed she has trouble finding humor in life and constantly picks fights with me.

sorry dude, but sounds like you have tried everything, and good on you for being supportive and honest. bad news is, she will most likely only put on more weight, and keep it on, after having your child. the only thing I can suggest is make sure you are doing all these things with her, not just telling her what to do. go grocery shopping together, make sure no junk food goes in the trolley, offer to cook dinner more often and make every meal as healthy as you can. if you find any junk food in the house toss it, and make sure there are lots of healthy snacks like fresh fruit and nuts to take the place of what your wife would normally eat during the day. go to the gym together, walk the dog together, obviously she is getting quite lonely at home so if your quality time is doing something active (even sex burns a lot of calories) she will lose the weight a lot easier. perhaps your wife would benefit from seeing a GP or counsellor if there is an underlying emotional problem causing her to not want to lose the weight. good luck!
